Theme Ageing is based at Karolinska Hospital and is tasked with the establishment and management of a Centre of Excellence for integrated, highly specialized geriatric care, research and training. Its vision is to be a hub and knowledge generator at Europe’s largest geriatric university healthcare provider and offer frontline treatment at scale to the county’s and region’s ageing population. GAVA, based at Karolinska Huddinge, is the first geriatric emergency department in Stockholm, and was established in collaboration with Funktion Akut. The elderly with multiple illnesses department is also here, which includes two patient groups, trauma and surgery.

KTH in Flemingsberg develops healthcare systems of the future with increased digital support for patients in their homes and explores their impact on the formation of the healthcare system in general. As KTH develops technologies that are used by doctors in hospitals, the focus of research is to protect people at their places of work, in particular those exposed to risks on a daily basis and those who work in highly demanding conditions. Baltic and Eastern Europe Research plays a key role at Södertörn University and is offered at all the university’s departments. The field has a well-developed research profile that has existed at the university since it was founded in 1996. At Karolinska Hospital Huddinge, there is a production facility that has approval from the Swedish Medical Products Agency to manufacture advanced therapeutic drugs for clinical use and has permission from the Medical Products Agency and the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) to produce tissue.

Mandometer clinics have been successfully treating eating disorders since 1993. The first clinic opened at Karolinska Huddinge and today there are four Mandometer clinics in Sweden, three in Stockholm and one in Alingsås. The treatment is based on research, conducted at Karolinska Institutet, into eating behaviours and saturation. Around 1,000 unique patients come to the Mandometer clinics every year. Compared to other treatments, the clinics’ results are extremely good. This is due to the continual development of the Mandometer approach through research at Karolinska Institutet. Research improves patient treatment, for those with eating disorders and the overweight.

The specialist nursing program with a focus on infectious care at the Swedish Red Cross University is an education at an advanced level for licensed nurses. The program leads to a specialist nursing degree in infectious disease and a master’s degree in nursing and gives eligibility for further studies at the doctoral level.
